The Chilcot Charade and Blair’s Bloody Legacy

At the end of the day, the result will be neither here nor there. I say this with reference to the Chilcot Inquiry. Of course now that the Big-Wigs are giving evidence it’s currently plastered all over the papers, and no doubt there will be much hand-wringing and belly-aching over the eventual finding, which I predict is a foregone conclusion.
We all know that the war was waged on a false premise. And many of us suspected it at the time. But of course Blair et Al had made up their minds that ‘we’ were going in, because by doing so, they were performing players on the world stage along side the US. And as for the reservations of Joe Public, and more importantly, the soldiers who were tasked with ‘mission impossible’- well they counted for absolutely nothing. Our forces were simply doing their duty, and more to the point, doing what they were commanded to do by our self-obsessed, power-crazed Labour government. And if 179 service personnel got killed along the way- well, soldiers realise the risks when they sign up, don’t they?
The most disgusting thing about this utterly horrific travesty is that nothing that anyone can say or do can bring these soldiers, or the countless dead Iraquis, back. Nothing can undo the wrong of what has been done. That said, words are cheap and it can be relatively easy to say ‘sorry.’ But Blair it seems, can’t even scrape up the decency to do that.
Worse still, the on-going situation in Afghanistan is poignantly similar in the sense that our boys’ lives are being expended on an almost daily basis fighting a battle that it is not our business to fight. Amidst all the huffing and puffing of Chilcot, Blair’s legacy lives on: British blood routinely spilt waging a foreign war that is not in our interest.
So please, amidst all the indignation and condemnation in the eventual aftermath of Chilcot, remember not just the dead and the injured, but those soldiers who have yet to die, sacrificed for sake of the pride of our rotten politicians who simply haven’t got the guts to say they’ve got it wrong.
